MISSION PRIORITIES
FOR NORTH ALABAMA PRESBYTERY
Adopted October 15, 2002
- Assist the churches of North Alabama Presbytery in realizing their potential to make disciples of Jesus Christ within their congregations and to serve in their community and beyond.
- Under this priority, we will focus on the following input from local church Sessions, which we received at the 2000 Triennial Convocation. (See attachment.)
a. We will help churches develop approaches to reach the unchurched, with special emphasis on reaching youth and young adults. (1-5)
b. We will help churches motivate people to grow in knowledge and understanding of the Bible. (13)
c. We will help churches empower members to discover their God-given gifts and use their gifts in their daily lives. (8-9)
d. We will help churches move beyond a survival mentality and strive for renewal. (19)
e. We will help churches see the need and benefit of change, and to desire change that will enable churches to grow and minister effectively in their communities and the world. (16)
Note: The number in parentheses correspond to the stated priorities received from local Sessions at our Convocation 2000.
- Start new churches (e. g., Hispanic New Church in Decatur) within the bounds of North Alabama Presbytery, where need is indicated.
- Provide select facilities (e. g., Maranatha, North Alabama Presbytery Resource Center) and sponsor select programs (e. g., Maranatha Youth Camping Program, special retreats) for spiritual development and fellowship of members.
- Support individual churches, groups of churches and networks in carrying out special mission opportunities with others in their communities and in the world (e. g., South African Presbytery to Presbytery relationship, Peacemaking and Hunger, Presbyterian Women and Men).
